Iran must be prepared “for war,” the country’s Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref said on Thursday, amid heightened tensions and threats of possible military intervention by the United States.

“Today, we must be ready for war. The Islamic Republic of Iran never initiates a war, but if one is imposed upon it, it will defend itself with force,” Aref emphasized, according to Iran’s ISNA news agency.

His remarks come as rhetoric between Tehran and Washington continues to escalate, while the international community voices growing concern over the risk of further destabilization in the region.
