The political leader of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, was killed in Tehran by a short-range missile weighing around 7 kg, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard said in a statement on Saturday.

Tehran’s retaliation for the attack will be “severe and will occur at a suitable time, place, and manner,” the statement read, blaming Israel – “the adventurous and terrorist Zionist regime” – for his death. Meanwhile, the Pentagon announced that the United States will deploy additional fighter jets and warships to the Middle East.

Washington aims to bolster defense following threats from Iran and its allies, Hezbollah and Hamas – the Palestinian group designated as a terrorist organization by the US and the European Union.

Tensions in the region are extremely high following the killing of Haniyeh and a senior commander of the Lebanese group, Hezbollah.
