International outrage over Israel’s actions in Gaza has spilled beyond politics and diplomacy, reaching the cultural sphere. Ireland, Spain, and Slovenia are among the countries publicly opposing Israel’s potential participation in Eurovision 2026, warning that they may withdraw from the contest.
In an official statement, Ireland’s national broadcaster RTE declared:
“Ireland will not participate in the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel’s participation continues, and the final decision on Ireland’s participation will be taken once the EBU (European Broadcasting Union) makes its decision.”
RTE stressed that “Ireland’s participation would be unreasonable” given the ongoing and devastating loss of life in Gaza.
Similarly, Spain’s Culture Minister, Ernest Urtasun, said on Monday that Spain may withdraw from Eurovision if Israel is not excluded from the competition.
Meanwhile, Slovenia’s public broadcaster RTV Slovenija announced last Friday that it will not take part in Eurovision 2026 if Israel is allowed to participate.
The EBU’s upcoming decision will be crucial in determining whether some countries will boycott one of the world’s most-watched music festivals.
