The Israeli Defense Forces have announced the start of ground operations in southern Lebanon, marking a significant escalation in clashes with Hezbollah around the strategic southern city of Khiam.

According to Al Jazeera Arabic, at least three airstrikes hit Khiam on Monday. The city, a known Hezbollah stronghold, occupies a key strategic position and is considered a gateway into southern Lebanon.

The latest conflict erupted after Hezbollah fired rockets in response to the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Notably, Hezbollah had not attacked Israel since the 2024 ceasefire, despite repeated violations of the U.S.-mediated agreement with Israel.

In addition, Israeli airstrikes targeted the city of Yater, with no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Ground raids were also conducted in Burj Qalawiya, Sultaniya, and Chaqra, with two additional raids reported in Qantara and as-Sawana.

Reports indicate that more than 800,000 people, including women and children, have been displaced, as the Israeli military issued evacuation orders for numerous neighborhoods in southern Lebanon, as well as the capital, Beirut.
