The Israeli Embassy in Spain has today accused the Spanish government of launching an “anti-Israeli crusade” following recent statements by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. Sánchez had called for the suspension of the EU-Tel Aviv agreement due to the “catastrophic genocidal situation” in the Gaza Strip.
According to the Israeli Embassy, Sánchez’s call effectively “demonized Israel.”
“Amidst this ‘aggression,’ the Spanish government has chosen not to condemn – not once – the deliberate and continuous attacks on Israeli civilians, instead launching an anti-Israeli crusade. Instead, it has called for the suspension of European agreements with Israel and imposed an arms embargo on a country that has been attacked!” the embassy stated in its press release.
Earlier today, Sánchez had asserted that a genocide of the Palestinian population was underway in Gaza and urged the immediate suspension of the European Union’s cooperation agreement with Israel. Speaking to journalists ahead of the EU summit in Brussels, Sánchez highlighted a recent report by the EU’s diplomatic service on the human rights situation in the Palestinian enclave. He stated that it was “more than obvious” that Israel was violating its obligations and that the EU should immediately suspend the cooperation agreement.
“It makes no sense that we have imposed 18 rounds of sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine, but then, showing double standards, we are unable to suspend a cooperation agreement,” Sánchez argued.
