The new high representative of the EU, Kaja Kallas, is expected to appoint Danish career diplomat and former EU Special Representative for Bosnia and Herzegovina, Peter Sorensen, as the new mediator in the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue.
As reported by Radio Free Europe in its Serbian-Croatian version, Sorensen has been designated as Lajčak’s successor in the role of dialogue facilitator.
According to the report, Kaja Kallas’s first visit to the Western Balkans is expected after the elections in Kosovo, which are scheduled for February 9.
Lajčak recently visited the United States, where he met with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs, James O’Brien, and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for the Western Balkans, Alexander Kasanoff.
Lajčak was appointed EU Special Representative for the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue and other regional Western Balkan issues on April 2, 2020, and Brussels recently extended his mandate until January 31.
