Local authorities in the Italian city of Ravenna and the Emilia-Romagna region have halted the transit of explosives intended for Israel, preventing them from being loaded onto a ship at the city’s port, according to Italian media reports.

Two containers of explosives, originating from the Czech Republic and Hungary and arriving in Italy via Austria, were scheduled for shipment to Haifa, Israel, according to Il Fato Quotidiano.

Port workers organized protests upon learning of the shipment, joined by Ravenna Mayor Alessandro Barattini and Emilia-Romagna President Michele De Pascale. Officials sent a letter to the management of Sapir, the terminal operator in Ravenna, demanding that the transit of weapons and ammunition be stopped.

The Democratic Party expressed full support for the local authorities, emphasizing its long-standing call for a total arms embargo to and from Israel. Additionally, Five Star Movement Senator Marco Croati condemned the transit and export of weapons to the Israeli military, criticizing Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani for the handling of the shipment.

This decision highlights growing local and political opposition in Italy to the transit of weapons linked to the ongoing Middle East conflicts.
