The Italian government reiterated today that it will not send military troops to Ukraine, despite Italy’s continued support for Kyiv.

The announcement follows the summit of the so-called “Alliance of the Willing”, a coalition of primarily European countries providing security guarantees and support to Ukraine.

During the summit, in which she participated virtually, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni emphasized that:

“Italy is not prepared to deploy troops on Ukrainian territory,” according to an official government statement.

The statement also clarifies that Italy can contribute to a potential ceasefire through monitoring initiatives and training programs, but all support will remain outside Ukrainian borders.

Italy’s position contrasts with several other European countries that have committed to sending troops or military support to Ukraine, highlighting Rome’s cautious approach to direct involvement in the conflict.
