Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced that Italy will take part in the Peace Board, but only as an observer, bypassing the constitutional difficulties she had mentioned three weeks ago, according to Italian media reports.
“We were invited as an observer country, and in our opinion, this is a good solution to the issue we have regarding constitutional compatibility with membership in the Peace Board,” Meloni told reporters.
“I think we will respond positively to this invitation to participate as an observer country. At what level we will participate is still to be determined, as the invitation arrived just yesterday,” the Prime Minister added.
According to Meloni, after all the work Italy has done to stabilize the Middle East, “an Italian and European presence is necessary.”
The first official meeting of the Peace Board is expected on February 19 in Washington, with participation from at least twenty countries. Donald Trump is expected to announce a multi-billion-dollar reconstruction plan for Gaza.
