A spectacular armed robbery took place in the Calabria region of southern Italy, where a criminal group managed to seize €2 million from an armored cash-transport vehicle.
The incident occurred at 6:30 a.m. on Monday on a highway near the town of Shilas, a small coastal settlement located at the closest point between mainland Italy and Sicily. According to Italian media, ten armed individuals blocked the armored van by positioning their vehicles across the road. Within minutes, the group seized all the money and transferred it to their own getaway car before fleeing at high speed.
To prevent police pursuit, the perpetrators set two vehicles on fire, completely blocking one side of the highway. They also scattered metal spikes across the road to further hinder law enforcement efforts. Authorities confirmed that no injuries were reported during the incident. The stolen funds were reportedly intended for pension payments and holiday bonuses.
Investigators believe the group was highly professional, employing sophisticated techniques commonly associated with the ’Ndrangheta, the Calabrian mafia known as one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Europe. The style of the robbery mirrors previous attacks on armored vehicles in Italy, indicating a high level of coordination and criminal expertise.
