Jakup Krasniqi’s lawyer, Venkateswari Alagendra, began presenting her closing statement at the Specialized Chambers of Kosovo.
She stated that her client has been unjustly deprived of his freedom for the past five years.
“There is only one option: for you to deliver a verdict of not guilty and for him to return to his family. Throughout these 34 months of trial, there has not been a single witness showing that he beat, tortured, or mistreated anyone. This prosecution mainly relies on speculation and unfounded claims,” she said.
Alagendra further noted that the prosecution has ignored exonerating evidence and emphasized that the court has failed to call a critical number of witnesses who could have provided information about the hierarchy of the Kosovo Liberation Army.
In her opening remarks for the closing arguments, Krasniqi’s defense argued that the prosecution has also failed to establish any link between her client and the alleged crimes.
“This indictment should not have been filed at all. The prosecution should have withdrawn it at an earlier stage, but it did not,” she added.
Krasniqi’s defense plans to extend the presentation of their closing arguments throughout the day.
