Former NATO spokesman Jamie Shea has stated that Russia has already recorded its 1 millionth casualty in the war in Ukraine. According to Shea, the Ukrainian side has suffered approximately 400,000 killed. He emphasized that despite the massive number of casualties, there has been no diplomatic breakthrough in talks between the two parties.
“Russia is not ready for an agreement. Its goal is to impose its dictates on Ukraine, which Ukraine has no reason to accept,” Shea said.
According to Shea, Russia has occupied about 20% of Ukrainian territory, but “Ukraine has not lost the war, nor has Russia won it.“
Commenting on the role of former US President Donald Trump, Shea stated that “Trump does not lack logic, but he thinks his administration is not following the right path to bring peace between Russia and Ukraine.”
“Unfortunately, there is a disconnect between Trump’s ambitions and the means to achieve them. He must continue military support for Ukraine and send a clear message to Putin that he will not be able to win, but will have to compromise,” Shea added.
He warned that Trump’s unclear messages could be interpreted as a green light for Putin. “One day Trump says he will allow Russia to keep occupied territories, another day he changes his stance. This gives Putin an advantage,” he emphasized. “Instead of favoring Russia, Trump should exert extreme pressure on it,” Shea concluded.
