Western Balkans policy expert Dušan Janić has stated that the United States is expected to present a formal document on mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia in March or April.

Speaking on the DLZ podcast, Janić emphasized that the document will not be a non-paper, a fact which, according to him, has caused serious concern among Serbian political circles.

By April at the latest, or possibly May, a draft agreement on mutual recognition will be presented by the United States of America,” Janić said.

He questioned the role of Serbian institutions in Washington, asking why senior officials appear unprepared for a document that has reportedly been in preparation for a long time.

Janić stressed that the upcoming document will be an official proposal, not an informal diplomatic paper, and that work is being carried out at the highest political levels.

“They are afraid of this like a snake fears a frog,” Janić remarked, adding that mutual recognition between Kosovo and Serbia is one of the key points of the document.

According to him, the seriousness and formal nature of the US proposal is precisely what has unsettled Serbian officials, as it signals a decisive shift in Washington’s approach to the dialogue process.
