Janjiq: Division or Association in Kosovo Does Not Solve the Serbian Question

Serbian sociologist Dušan Janjić has explained why he opposes two political projects for Kosovo that, according to him, were promoted under the idea of “all Serbs under one plum tree”: the partition of Kosovo/ethnic border redrawing and ethnic territorialization through the Association.

Janjić emphasized that, besides these two options, there was also a third proposal dividing Kosovo along the Iber River but he argued that this, too, would not resolve the Serbian national issue.

“Most Serbs live south of the Iber, including in Gracanica,” he said on KTV, stressing that territorial division would not reflect the demographic reality on the ground.

He further argued that building a state on ethnic foundations is unsustainable.

“You cannot build a state on the basis of ethnicity. A state is made by citizenship,” Janjić stated, underlining that identity, culture, and language can develop without exclusive territorial projects.

Referring to the breakup of Yugoslavia and the policies of Slobodan Milosevic, Janjić criticized attempts to subordinate Albanians and turn them into “second-class citizens.” According to him, those policies not only failed but also produced consequences that, as he said, are still being paid by the Serbian nation itself.

Janjić concluded that the only sustainable alternative has been a sincere reorganization of society on democratic, economic, and pluralistic foundations rather than projects aimed at ethnic division or territorial control.
