Japan and the United States aim to develop a joint military plan for a potential emergency in the Taiwan region of China, which includes the deployment of missiles.
According to the plan, which is expected to be implemented next month, the U.S. will deploy missile units on the Nansei Islands in Japan’s southwestern prefectures of Kagoshima and Okinawa, as well as in the Philippines, according to reports citing sources from the U.S. and Japan, writes Reuters.
The U.S. Marine Corps Regiment, which has high-mobility artillery rocket systems (HIMARS) and other weapons, will be stationed on the Nansei Islands.
A U.S. unit responsible for space, cyber, and electromagnetic waves will be deployed in the Philippines, according to the report.
The Japanese Ministry of Defense and the U.S. and Philippine embassies in Tokyo did not respond to requests for comment.
