A Japanese city is considering restricting residents’ smartphone use to two hours per day due to concerns about the effects of excessive technology exposure.
The proposed ordinance from Toyoake City in Aichi Prefecture would be the first municipal regulation in Japan aiming to limit smartphone and electronic device usage, Kyodo News reports.
If approved by the local assembly, the ordinance is set to take effect on October 1, according to KosovaPress.
A city official stated, “We want the ordinance to give people an opportunity to reflect on how they use smartphones.” There are no penalties proposed for those who exceed the limit.
The draft also recommends that elementary school students avoid smartphone use after 9 p.m., while junior and senior high school students should refrain from using devices after 10 p.m.
While acknowledging that smartphones, computers, and tablets are essential tools, the ordinance warns that excessive use of social media and video streaming can harm health and family life.
