The United States has declared January 9 a National Day of Mourning in honor of former President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 100.

“I call upon the American people to gather in their places of worship on this day to honor the memory of President James Earl Carter Jr. I invite those around the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn remembrance,” said outgoing President Joe Biden.

Carter, the longest-living former U.S. president, passed away at his home in Plains, Georgia, the town where he was born.

A Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Carter served as the 39th president of the United States from 1977 to 1981. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to prevent conflicts and promote global peace.
