The President of the USA, Joe Biden, has announced that he will end his candidacy for re-election, saying that “it is in the best interest of my party and the country”.

This announcement comes four months before Americans go to the polls, changing the race for the White House, the BBC reported.

The decision comes after weeks of intense pressure from fellow Democrats following a poor performance in a debate against Republican Donald Trump in late June.

In a letter posted on his social media account, he said it has been the greatest honor of his life to serve as president.

“And while it has been my intention to seek re-election, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and country that I step down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”

He said in his statement that he will address the nation on this issue next week.

President Biden thanked Vice President Kamala Harris, saying she was a “tremendous partner.”
