European Commissioner Marta Kos reported on her meeting with the President of the Serbian Parliament, Ana Bërnabić, during which she issued warnings regarding political interference in the judiciary.

Kos stated that she urged Serbia to suspend the implementation of new laws until the Venice Commission provides its assessment.

“I told the President of the Serbian Parliament, Ana Bërnabić, that the recent steps taken by Serbian authorities to curb the independence of its judiciary are of serious concern. We expect that the implementation of the new judicial laws be suspended until the Venice Commission gives its opinion, and that Serbian authorities respect that opinion and revise the laws accordingly,” Kos wrote.

She also called for an end to attacks on journalists and civil society.

“I informed the Parliament President of our ongoing assessment regarding whether Serbia continues to meet the conditions for disbursements under EU financial instruments. I also called for an end to attacks on civil society and journalists,” Kos concluded.
