U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he held a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, just hours before a high-level meeting scheduled in Florida with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
“I just had a good and very productive phone call with Russian President Putin, ahead of my 1:00 PM meeting today with President Zelensky of Ukraine,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social.
According to Trump, the meeting with Zelensky will take place in the main dining hall of the Mar-a-Lago resort, with media present.
The phone conversation with Putin comes at a critical moment, as Russia has intensified missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, adding an urgent and tense backdrop to the Trump-Zelensky meeting.
Trump and Putin last spoke in October, when they had tentatively agreed to organize a summit in Budapest. However, a few days later, Trump abruptly canceled the meeting, stating that he believed such a summit would be a waste of time.
Today’s meeting with Zelensky is expected to draw close attention, at a time when the war in Ukraine and diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions remain at the center of international focus.
