Kaja Kallas, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, today remarked that the 50-day deadline President Donald Trump has given Russia before imposing potential sanctions is “very long when innocent civilians are dying every day.”
“It’s very positive that President Trump is taking a firm stance toward Russia,” Kallas told reporters. “On the other hand, 50 days is very long when you see that they are also killing innocent civilians every day.”
Earlier today, President Trump, speaking at the White House with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, threatened to impose “very severe tariffs” against Russia’s allies if no agreement is reached to end the war in Ukraine within 50 days.
“I’m disappointed in President Putin, because I thought we would have had a deal two months ago, but it doesn’t seem to be happening,” the U.S. President stated. Trump added that he would therefore apply secondary tariffs to Moscow’s allies, specifying, “If we don’t have a deal in 50 days, it’s very simple (the tariff measures) will be 100 percent, and that’s it.”
