The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, confirmed that the EU has begun lifting the punitive measures imposed on Kosovo.
She stated that the removal of the measures, introduced nearly two years ago, is happening gradually.
Kallas also referred to the closure of Serbian parallel structures in northern Kosovo, actions which she claimed undermine efforts to de-escalate tensions.
“As a sign of our commitment, I can announce that the EU has started gradually lifting the measures introduced in June 2023. This decision opens the door to greater development opportunities for Kosovo and brings it closer to Europe. However, it is conditional on maintaining de-escalation in the north. The dismantling of Serbia-backed structures undermines efforts towards de-escalation,” she said.
Kallas emphasized that there is no shortcut to EU membership.
In the press conference held during her visit to Kosovo, she reiterated that Kosovo belongs in the European family.
“Kosovo belongs to the European family. But there are no shortcuts to membership. Progress can only be achieved through sustainable reforms,” Kallas stated.
