The EU’s High Representative, Kaja Kallas, has made an open invitation to the new U.S. Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, to attend a meeting with the bloc in Brussels, officials said.

“In my letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio, I extended an open invitation for his participation in one of our meetings as soon as possible,” Kallas wrote to EU Foreign Ministers, AFP has learned.

Officials said that no response has been received so far.

The latest attempt to engage with the new U.S. administration comes as Donald Trump intensifies his criticism of the EU. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos yesterday, he spoke of what he sees as an imbalance or unfair approach by the EU and said he would “do something about it.”

There is also much to discuss regarding Russia, Ukraine, and the Middle East, among other issues.

So far, the only known conversation between a senior U.S. official and a senior EU official was the phone call between Rubio and Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, which the Polish minister revealed in a social media post.
