The new head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, is expected to soon begin her new role, succeeding Josep Borrell. Kallas, who has already arrived in the European capital, is anticipated to handle, among other issues, the Kosovo-Serbia dialogue process, according to Radio Free Europe.
As Radio Free Europe reports in English, under Kallas’s leadership in foreign policy, the position of special envoy, currently held by Slovak Miroslav Lajčák, may be completely removed. Lajčák’s mandate expires on January 31, 2025. According to REL, despite Borrell appointing Lajčák in 2020 as special envoy, there has been little real progress in the negotiations. Brussels diplomats also expect her to be prepared to engage in the sharp Beograd-Pristina dialogue initiated by the EU. Borrell, the current head of EU foreign policy, had requested former Slovak Foreign Minister Miroslav Lajčák in 2020 to serve as the EU’s special representative for the dialogue, but there has been little tangible progress, and this role may be entirely eliminated with Kallas at the helm,” reads REL’s text published on August 27, 2024.
Kallas announced on August 26 that she has arrived in Brussels and is looking forward to meeting with her EU diplomatic service colleagues. She has indicated that the coming weeks will be filled with meetings and discussions, with a focus on her confirmation session in the European Parliament.
