EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Kaja Kallas, has urged the United States to take “serious action” against Russia if it refuses to agree to an unconditional ceasefire in Ukraine.
“The U.S. has stated that if Russia does not agree to an unconditional ceasefire, there will be consequences. So we want to see those consequences, including from the American side,” Kallas said during a meeting with EU foreign and defense ministers in Brussels.
Her remarks come amid ongoing concerns that Russia is not genuinely engaging in peace talks.
Ahead of the meeting, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also weighed in, accusing Russian President Vladimir Putin of using talks with the U.S. merely to buy time.
“We’ve seen renewed massive Russian attacks in recent days… These speak louder than the empty words about peace talks we’ve heard for so long,” Pistorius stated.
“Putin is clearly buying time. Sadly, we have to acknowledge that he’s not genuinely interested in peace,” he added.
The statements reflect mounting frustration in Europe over Russia’s actions and a growing push for the U.S. to back its warnings with concrete measures if Moscow continues to evade peace efforts.
