The European Union’s Foreign Policy Chief, Kaja Kallas, has commented on the recent U.S. airstrikes against Iran, raising questions about their legality under international law.

When asked by the BBC if the strikes were lawful, Kallas stated it’s “not absolute,” adding that “anyone who uses force must also justify that this is in accordance with international law.”

Diplomacy Remains Key

According to Kallas, while the U.S. attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities may have temporarily halted the nuclear program, “this has not ‘erased’ the knowledge” Iran possesses in this field. This, she emphasized, “underscores the need for a diplomatic solution.”

Kallas also highlighted that numerous outstanding issues remain between the West and Tehran. She cited Iran’s ballistic missile program, its support for Russia in the war in Ukraine, and cases of European citizens detained in Iran. “We need to sit down and discuss all these issues,” Kallas concluded.
