She congratulated two countries. But, made a serious mistake with another.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, expressed her happiness regarding the entry of Bulgaria and Romania into the Schengen Area by publishing a map of the continent.
However, there was a problem. Kosovo was not shown with its borders. In the published map, the state of Kosovo appeared as part of Serbia.
This serious mistake was noticed by civil society member and jurist Kaltrina Kamberi, who reacted immediately, requesting the map be corrected.
“As a representative of the #EU, it’s crucial to ensure maps accurately reflect the status of countries. #Kosovo is an independent nation, and showing it as part of Serbia is incorrect. I understand this may have been an oversight, but kindly update the map to reflect Kosovo’s sovereignty before reposting.”
Following Kamberi’s reaction, many others from all over Europe reacted and supported Kamberi’s stance.
Among them were German politician Doris Pack, a former member of the European Parliament and chair of the delegation for relations between Western Balkan states, and Alicia Kearns, a member of the UK Parliament.
This led Ursula von der Leyen to recognize the mistake and completely remove the post where Kosovo was not depicted as an independent state with its own borders.
Kamberi, along with many others, has also demanded an apology from von der Leyen.
