Shaip Kamberi, head of the Albanian electoral list in Serbia’s Preševo Valley, said some Serbian politicians continue to pursue what he described as a colonialist vision of regaining control over Kosovo.
Speaking on the Info Magazine programme, Kamberi argued that political thinking in Serbia remains influenced by historical myths rather than strategic efforts to improve relations with Kosovo and the Albanian community in the Preševo Valley.
“They continue with their colonialist dream, with the idea that they have lost Kosovo but still hold an imaginary hope of regaining control over it, and with a politics dominated by medieval myths,” Kamberi said.
He added that, in his view, Serbia’s political establishment had so far failed to develop a strategic approach that would help ease tensions and build more constructive relations with its neighbours and minority communities.
“So far, no political class in Serbia has managed to develop the political depth needed to think strategically, first of all to ease relations with Kosovo, improve relations with Albanians in the Preševo Valley, and build better ties,” Kamberi said.
His remarks highlight continuing disagreements over Serbia’s policy toward Kosovo and the position of ethnic Albanians living in southern Serbia.
