As part of the parliamentary group SDA of Sandžak and the Free Citizens’ Movement (PSG), MP Shaip Kamberi has submitted a proposal to the National Assembly of Serbia to repeal the law ratifying the agreement between the Serbian and Russian governments establishing the Serbo-Russian Humanitarian Center in Niš.
After 13 years of operation, Kamberi argues, there is no evidence that the center has acted in the interest of Serbian citizens or played a significant role in disaster response. Instead, its activities have been marked by lack of transparency, unclear funding, and serious concerns regarding political and security influence both domestically and regionally.
Kamberi also highlighted concerns over attempts to grant the center and its staff diplomatic status and immunity, which he says is inconsistent with standard humanitarian practices.
Investigative journalism has reportedly revealed that individuals linked to Russian intelligence services and paramilitary groups in Serbia participated in training aimed at stirring unrest during elections in Moldova and Romania, raising further alarms about the center’s operations.
The proposed repeal aims to eliminate existing doubts and accelerate Serbia’s European integration, as the center has been criticized in reports by the European Commission and other EU institutions.
