To ensure that SPAK (Special Anti-Corruption Prosecution) continues its fight against corruption and organized crime in the future, we believe that SPAK prosecutors should be allowed to apply to serve again after the completion of their current term.
This message was conveyed by Alexander Kasanof, Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans, during his visit to Albania for the 5th anniversary of SPAK.
He stated, “Failing to implement this could risk interrupting the most successful effort against crime and corruption in Albanian history and result in the loss of experienced professionals.”
According to him, SPAK is one of the most trusted institutions in Albania, but it cannot solve all the country’s problems, as the fight against corruption is a task for everyone.
“Justice will prevail. No one is above the law. In addition to being held accountable to the citizens, your actions must be accountable to justice. These processes, bringing justice forward, are crucial for building a good justice system. Independent institutions must be effective. The independence of SPAK remains essential. SPAK is one of the most trusted institutions in Albania. SPAK under Dumani cannot solve all of Albania’s problems. Other institutions must also show courage and dignity. The fight against corruption is everyone’s responsibility,” said Kasanof.
He emphasized that “during SPAK’s five years, we have seen the most hopeful future that a more democratic future is possible.”
The visit of Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Balkans, Alexander Kasanof, to Albania comes on the 5th anniversary of SPAK and five months after he was appointed to this position by the U.S. Department of State.
