Former Special Prosecutor Milivoje Katnić presented new evidence today in his defense at the Supreme Court, alleging that wiretaps were concealed and falsified by prosecutor Miloš Šoškić. Katnić stated that the evidence completely refutes claims in the indictment that he, former senior police official Zoran Lazović, prosecutor Saša Čađenović, and suspended police officer Petar Lazović acted in favor of the Kavač criminal group.
Instead, Katnić claimed, it was the Kavač clan that collaborated with the Serbian Intelligence Agency (BIA).
“From the beginning, I have maintained that the Kavač clan worked with the BIA. Later, conflicts escalated between President Aleksandar Vučić and then-Minister of Interior Nebojša Stefanović,” Katnić said.
According to Katnić, the Serbian Ministry of Interior and BIA cooperated with the Kavač clan, and the violent clashes with the Škaljar clan were the result of a political rift between Stefanović and Vučić.
The political split between Vučić and Stefanović also caused divisions within the Kavač clan, as most members sided with Stefanović, while some supported Vučić.
Katnić cited messages from Serbian Ministry of Interior officer Danijel Jovanović to Ljubo Milović, which referenced connections between the Škaljar clan and Andrej Vučić, brother of President Aleksandar Vučić.
He emphasized that the Škaljar clan wielded influence within Serbia’s security structures, particularly after Stefanović’s departure, reinforcing his claims about the BIA’s links to the Kavač group.
Katnić faces charges of being part of a criminal group allegedly formed by Zoran Lazović, with Saša Čađenović as a purported member. The indictment accuses them of abusing official positions in favor of the Kavač criminal group.
Katnić and Lazović have categorically denied all charges.
