The Kosova Energy Corporation (KEK) announces a €137 million investment to rehabilitate and modernize Unit A3 at the Kosova A power plant, improving energy production and environmental efficiency.

The Kosova Energy Corporation (KEK) has launched its largest-ever investment in energy production since the construction of its power plants four decades ago. With €137 million allocated for the rehabilitation and modernization of Unit A3 at the Kosova A power plant, this project is set to strengthen Kosovo’s energy security and sustainability.

Key Highlights of the Project

At the project’s launch event, attended by Prime Minister Albin Kurti and Minister of Economy Artane Rizvanolli, the following benefits were outlined:

  • Extended operational lifespan: The rehabilitation will extend Unit A3’s service life by 20 years.
  • Increased capacity: Energy output will rise from 120–140 MW to 215 MW.
  • Higher productivity: Annual operational hours will increase from 5,400 to 7,700, nearly doubling annual energy production from 700,000 MWh to 1.5 million MWh.
  • Improved environmental efficiency: The upgraded unit will consume 30% less coal and significantly reduce emissions, including a 50% cut in particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and sulfur dioxide.

Prime Minister Kurti emphasized that this project demonstrates KEK’s ability to self-finance such a significant investment through profits generated over the last four years.

Broader Energy Transition Efforts

The project is part of Kosovo’s broader strategy for energy transition, which includes:

  • Solar energy initiatives: KEK is building a 100 MW solar park with government-secured funding.
  • Renewable energy auctions: The Ministry of Economy is conducting its second auction for 100 MW of wind energy capacity.
  • Battery storage systems: Kosovo is partnering with the U.S., leveraging a $202 million grant, to develop advanced energy storage systems supported by an additional €34.7 million co-financing from the government.

Minister Rizvanolli highlighted the importance of local energy resources in ensuring a stable energy supply, a policy shaped by lessons learned from the global energy crisis of 2021-2022.

A Vision for the Future

Prime Minister Kurti lauded the teamwork between KEK employees, management, the Ministry of Economy, and international partners, including USAID, in bringing this ambitious project to fruition. He underscored that these efforts reflect a bold vision for sustainable governance that prioritizes public assets and the national interest.

The rehabilitation of Unit A3 marks a pivotal step in Kosovo’s journey toward energy independence and environmental sustainability, ensuring a reliable energy supply for decades to come.
