Ilir Kërçeli, a member of Vetëvendosje (VV), emphasized that other political parties cannot determine his party’s candidate for the position of Speaker of the Kosovo Parliament.
Speaking as he entered the Parliament ahead of the resumption of the constitutive session, Kërçeli stated:
“We have shown in the past that other parties cannot dictate our candidate. That may have happened before, but we are talking about the current situation,” he said briefly.
After three weeks, MPs reconvened on 20 August for the continuation of the Kosovo Parliament’s constitutive session. In accordance with the Constitutional Court ruling addressing the political deadlock, the vote for the parliamentary chair was conducted openly. VV proposed Albulena Haxhiu and Donika Gërvalla, but neither candidate secured the required 61 votes.
Following these two unsuccessful attempts, session chair Avni Dehari suspended the session, which is scheduled to resume today at 11:00.
Earlier, the Constitutional Court ruling established a 30-day deadline for the Parliament’s constitution and stipulated that a candidate cannot be voted on more than three times.
Kosovo held extraordinary parliamentary elections on 9 February 2025.
