Major General Enrico Barduani, Commander of KFOR, Emphasizes Political Solutions Over Military Force in the Region
KFOR Commander Major General Enrico Barduani underscored that addressing the tensions between Kosovo and Serbia requires political, not military, solutions. He confirmed KFOR’s readiness to manage security challenges, especially after reinforcing its forces following last year’s incident in Banjska.
Barduani highlighted that despite a relatively calm environment, the situation remains fragile, worsened by unilateral actions that could destabilize security. “Overall, the situation on the ground is calm yet fragile, with various unilateral actions from interested parties hindering stabilization,” Barduani told public television.
Focus on the Ibër Bridge and Political Solutions
Discussing the sensitive issue of the Ibër Bridge, Barduani reiterated KFOR’s neutral stance, insisting that decisions should come through dialogue and international coordination. “KFOR maintains its presence at the bridge, conducting regular patrols. We call on all actors to refrain from unilateral actions that might create tensions,” he stated.
Barduani emphasized the importance of cooperation: “We remain vigilant and coordinate closely with local, regional, and international partners to prevent escalation.”
KFOR’s Commitment and Readiness
Ensuring KFOR’s operational readiness remains a top priority. Barduani pointed out the significance of trust-based communication and collaboration for regional stability. He expressed KFOR’s unwavering support for the EU-facilitated dialogue between Pristina and Belgrade, emphasizing that dialogue is crucial for addressing unresolved issues for the benefit of all communities in Kosovo.
“While KFOR stands ready to fulfill its mandate impartially, military efforts will be incomplete without constructive engagement in dialogue by both parties. History has shown that dialogue is key to resolving conflicts,” Barduani emphasized.
In response to potential escalations, Barduani assured that KFOR is prepared to take necessary actions to uphold peace and stability.
