As Kosovo awaits the formation of its new institutions following the recent elections, political parties continue consultations over the selection of the Speaker of the Assembly—a position that has sparked debate and clashes between the opposition parties and Vetëvendosje (VV).

LDK MP Doarsa Kica-Xhelili has firmly stated that her party will not compromise on VV’s proposed candidate for this role, describing the figure as unacceptable to them.

“There are other political parties that seem willing to build such a political consensus. However, I have seen no willingness or approach from the winning party to engage with those parties that are open to such an agreement,” she said in a public statement.

Kica-Xhelili emphasized that the Speaker of the Assembly should not be a political figure, but a worthy representative of the entire legislature.

“Vetëvendosje must understand that the Speaker should be a dignified representative of the Assembly of Kosovo—not a political representative. I believe they continue to demonstrate this misunderstanding through their technical representative, Mr. Dehari, who seems unaware of the institutional role within Kosovo’s Assembly,” she added.

According to her, while citizens expect the swift formation of institutions, this should not come at the expense of principles.

“I regret that the situation is as it is. Citizens are rightly waiting for the institutions to be formed as soon as possible, but they must understand LDK’s position. We cannot make compromises over a figure who, to us, is entirely unacceptable, especially due to their approach to institutionalism and the democratic foundations of Kosovo,” concluded the MP.
