Ukraine’s air defense systems shot down dozens of Russian drones that attacked Kiev on the morning of July 31, in what the Ukrainian capital’s military administration called “the most massive attack of 2024.” Also, local officials said Russian forces attacked the regions of Kharkiv, Donetsk and Kherson, killing at least four people.
During the airstrike alert in Kiev, which lasted more than seven hours, Russian drones attacked the Ukrainian capital in two waves of attacks from all directions, said the head of Kiev’s military administration, Serhiy Popko.
The Ukrainian Air Force said air defenses destroyed all 89 drones launched at Kiev, as well as an X-59 missile.
“This is one of the most massive drone attacks,” Air Force Commander General Mykola Oleschuk wrote on Telegram.
The attack was the seventh that was carried out against Kiev during this month, said Popko, adding that “currently, according to the operational report, there are no victims or damage in Kiev”.
The emergency service of Ukraine said that in a region of Kiev a house was engulfed in fire by shrapnel from the destroyed drones, and the house suffered damage. However, authorities did not report any casualties and added that the fire was extinguished.
Meanwhile, the authorities in Donetsk said that one person was killed in the city of Toretsk, as a result of Russian shelling, while three civilians were also killed by Russian attacks in Kharkiv.
In Kherson, one person was killed and another was wounded by Russian shelling, Ukrainian authorities said.
Since Russia launched its unprovoked invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Moscow’s forces have systematically attacked Ukraine’s civilian and energy infrastructure, causing extensive damage and casualties.
Ukraine, meanwhile, has attacked oil refineries and other energy infrastructure inside Russia. /REL/
