Today, at the Kosharë Memorial Complex in Gjakova, Kosovo pays tribute to the heroes who fell during the battle that, 27 years ago, broke through the border between Kosovo and Albania.
The Battle of Kosharë, which began on April 9, 1999, as part of Operation “Shigjeta,” remains one of the bloodiest and most heroic confrontations of the Kosovo Liberation Army (UÇK) during the war for freedom.
Under the patronage of Acting President of Kosovo, Albulena Haxhiu, wreaths will be laid, and tributes paid at the graves of the fallen at 11:00 AM. A commemorative ceremony will follow at 12:00 PM, featuring speeches from state leaders and representatives of those who fought for liberation.
Additional ceremonies and academic events are scheduled for April 11 and 19 to honor the martyrs and veterans of this pivotal battle. The Battle of Kosharë not only marked a moral victory for the UÇK but also opened critical supply lines for weapons and logistical support to other conflict zones across Kosovo.
