Kosovo’s Minister of Economy, Artane Rizvanolli, and European Union Ambassador to Kosovo, Dirk Schuebel, visited the Kosovo B power plant to inspect progress on the installation of electrostatic precipitators and the DeNOx system, designed to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions.

The project, funded by the EU with approximately €84 million, covers both units, B1 and B2, and represents a major investment in Kosovo’s energy infrastructure.

Work on unit B1 began in April 2026 and is scheduled for completion in November this year, while work on B2 is planned to begin in April 2027. The Ministry of Economy has urged the contractor and the EU, as the contracting authority, to make every effort to meet the deadlines, stressing that the timely return of B1 to operation is particularly important for electricity supply security during the winter months.

The new systems aim to reduce dust concentrations in exhaust gases to 20 mg/Nm³ and nitrogen oxide emissions to 200 mg/Nm³. According to the project targets, this would reduce dust emissions by up to 18 times and nitrogen oxides by approximately three times, significantly improving the plant’s environmental performance.

During their meetings this week, Rizvanolli and Schuebel also discussed reforms under the EU Growth Plan, including the draft Law on the Energy Regulatory Office, which remains open for public consultation until November 5. Its adoption is linked to fulfilling a Growth Plan condition worth approximately €6.26 million.

The two officials also welcomed the results of the €75 million Energy Support Package, whose completion was marked on October 16. More than 200,000 households and 154 businesses in Kosovo benefited from the package.

Both reaffirmed their commitment to close cooperation on investments and reforms aimed at strengthening energy security, improving services for citizens and modernizing Kosovo’s energy sector.
