Minister of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade, and Innovation, Mimoza Kusari-Lila, met with the Swiss Federal Councillor and Minister of Finance, Karin Keller-Sutter, today to discuss a fundamental shift in the bilateral relationship between Kosovo and Switzerland.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the prestigious St. Gallen Symposium, focused on transitioning Kosovo from a recipient of Swiss development aid to a full-fledged economic and developmental partner.

Trade and the EFTA Agreement

A centerpiece of the discussion was the ratification of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between Kosovo and the EFTA (European Free Trade Association) countries, of which Switzerland is a leading member.

  • Increased Volume: The agreement is expected to significantly boost trade exchanges and formalize economic ties.
  • Positive Balance: Minister Kusari-Lila noted that Switzerland remains one of the few countries with which Kosovo maintains a positive trade balance, driven largely by service exports and niche manufacturing.

Industrial Development and Environmental Standards

The ministers discussed the modernization of Kosovo’s industrial infrastructure, specifically the creation of Industrial Zones built to high environmental and social standards.

  • Investment Attraction: Kosovo aims to leverage its partnership with Switzerland to attract high-tech Swiss companies and direct foreign investment (FDI).
  • Economic Sovereignty: A primary goal of these industrial initiatives is to increase local production and reduce Kosovo’s dependence on imports, thereby strengthening national economic security.

The Role of the Diaspora

Both ministers praised the Kosovar diaspora in Switzerland as a vital bridge between the two nations.

  • Diaspora Engagement: Kusari-Lila highlighted the diaspora’s evolution from providing remittances to becoming active investors and entrepreneurs in both countries.
  • Swiss Commitment: Minister Keller-Sutter acknowledged the significant contribution of the Kosovar community to Switzerland’s domestic economy and reaffirmed Switzerland’s commitment to ongoing collaborative projects.

Strategic Outlook

The meeting underscores Kosovo’s strategy of deepening ties with non-EU European powers to diversify its economic portfolio. By focusing on innovation, industrial zones, and free trade, Kosovo is positioning itself as a reliable regional hub for Swiss businesses looking for a near-shoring destination in the Western Balkans.
