Kosovo’s Members of Parliament are set to convene again tomorrow for the 37th attempt to constitute the Assembly. The process remains stalled over the election of the Speaker. Vetëvendosje (VV) has nominated Albulena Haxhiu for the position, but she is considered a divisive figure by other parties.
After multiple failures to elect her, VV has been trying for weeks to change the voting method to a secret ballot, a move opposed by other parties. The Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK), Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Alliance for the Future of Kosovo (AAK), and the Serb List have not proposed any members for the secret ballot committee.
Each time this committee is put to a vote, it fails to pass due to lack of quorum. The last session’s result was “With 53 votes for, one against, and no abstentions, the Assembly did not have a quorum for decision-making.” A similar outcome is expected tomorrow. The session will begin at 11:00 AM.
LDK Criticizes Vetëvendosje’s Stance
Hykmete Bajrami, Deputy Chairwoman and MP for the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), stated tonight that they are “tired of giving way to the acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti.” Bajrami asserted that Kurti and Vetëvendosje are behaving with the logic of the votes they received in the 2021 elections.
“We are tired of giving way to Albin Kurti, and him continuously violating the Constitution and laws and desecrating Kosovo’s institutions,” Bajrami declared. She added that if LDK were in VV’s position, institutions would have been constituted by now. “They insult and offend in the morning… then send letters for cooperation in the afternoon,” Bajrami concluded.
