Kosovo Assembly Speaker Albulena Haxhiu has asked Auditor General Vlora Spanca to include the Assembly of Kosovo in the National Audit Office’s audit programme, with a focus on procurement, maintenance and information technology.
In a request addressed to Spanca, Haxhiu highlighted the National Audit Office’s role in overseeing public spending and said the Assembly should demonstrate the same commitment to transparency and accountability that it expects from other public institutions, Kallxo.com reported.
“Recognizing the important role of the National Audit Office in overseeing the expenditure of public funds, and in the spirit of transparency and accountability that the Assembly demands from other institutions, I am addressing you with a request to include the Assembly itself in your audit programme, including, among other areas, procurement, maintenance and information technology,” the request stated.
Haxhiu said the Assembly fully respected the independence of the National Audit Office and its authority to determine the audit programme, scope and deadlines.
She added that the request demonstrated the Assembly’s willingness to undergo external scrutiny and cooperate fully with auditors, including by providing access to the necessary documents and information.
The National Audit Office is Kosovo’s highest institution responsible for public-sector financial and economic oversight. Although it reports to the Assembly, it has the authority to audit the financial, administrative and other activities, programmes and projects managed by public institutions.
The office has conducted audits of the Kosovo Assembly in the past. The Assembly also has its own internal auditors.
