Kosovo is currently fighting nine active wildfire outbreaks, according to the Agency for Emergency Management (AME). Over the past week alone, more than 633 fire incidents have been reported across the country.

AME Director Genc Metaj described the situation as “stable, but fragile”, citing high temperatures, lack of rainfall, and deliberate arson as key factors fueling the fires. He confirmed a 12% increase in wildfire cases compared to the same period last year and warned that legal action will be taken against those responsible.

Police in Kosovo have arrested 23 suspects in connection with the fires, said Police Lieutenant Colonel Jeton Rexhepi. All suspects face criminal proceedings, and investigations are ongoing.

In Mitrovica and Kamenica, the situation was so severe that KFOR troops had to intervene to assist in containing the flames.

Authorities are urging citizens to exercise maximum caution and emphasize collective responsibility in preventing wildfires that threaten the environment, lives, and property.
