For the third time since 2021, Kosovo is hosting the largest multinational military exercise directed by the U.S. Army Europe and Africa Command (USAREUR-AF) — “Defender Europe 2025.”
In this year’s operation, which brings together around 25,000 troops from 29 NATO member and partner countries, the Kosovo Security Force (KSF) is participating with approximately 1,000 soldiers, marking a strong display of operational readiness and international partnership.
U.S. Tactical Command Headquarters in Gjakova – A Historic First
Kosovo’s Acting Minister of Defense, Ejup Maqedonci, emphasized the historic significance of this exercise. For the first time, the 8th Infantry Division’s tactical command has been stationed at Gjakova Airport, which will oversee and coordinate all brigades operating in the Balkans.
Regional Deployment
KSF troops are not only stationed in Kosovo but have also been deployed to Albania, North Macedonia, and Croatia, enhancing regional military interoperability. Strengthening Ties with the United States
Maqedonci announced that on June 13, he will sign a Defense Framework Agreement at the Pentagon — the first of its kind between Kosovo and the United States.
This follows the SISMOA agreement signed on May 13, which covers the exchange of classified information and defense-related technology.
A Military and Political Message
Running from May 26 to June 9, Defender Europe 2025 is not only a military drill but also a clear political message — that Kosovo is a stable, capable, and reliable country ready to contribute to peace and cooperation in the region and beyond.
Through this exercise, Kosovo aims to demonstrate both its combat interoperability and readiness to align with NATO standards, further paving the way for potential future NATO membership.
