On December 24, 2025, the Energy Regulatory Office (ZRRE) held a meeting with Kosovo’s main licensed energy companies to assess electricity supply security during the year-end period, when consumption typically rises sharply.
Participants included representatives from:
- Kosovo Energy Corporation (KEK)
- Transmission and Market System Operator (KOSTT)
- Distribution System Operator (KEDS)
- Universal Service Supplier (KESCO)
The discussions focused on common challenges during the festive period, including:
- Impact of winter weather on electricity production and transmission.
- Technical limitations of the grid and the need for continuous balancing between production, imports, and consumption.
- Compliance with international obligations as part of the regional energy system.
- Institutional organization during holidays and elections to ensure uninterrupted energy system operations.
ZRRE requested that operators prepare and update contingency management plans, including possible scenarios and preventive measures for unforeseen situations.
Citizens and businesses were also urged to use electricity carefully and rationally, especially during peak hours, to maintain system stability and ensure continuous supply for all consumers.
Some areas, including Prizren, Rahovec, Gjilan, and Shtime, are facing electricity restrictions due to transmission capacity limitations. According to KOSTT, current electricity production in Kosovo is 800 MWh, while consumption reaches around 1,400 MWh.
