The Ministry of Industry, Entrepreneurship, Trade and Innovation has announced the establishment of a special commission to verify electricity meters across the country, aiming to ensure transparency, accuracy, and consumer protection.
According to the ministry, the move follows recent public discussions and claims regarding potential miscalculations in electricity consumption readings. Authorities emphasized that the initiative is grounded in the legal framework of consumer protection and is intended to safeguard the interests of citizens.
“In order to guarantee transparency, correctness, and the protection of citizens’ interests, and based on the Law on Consumer Protection, a dedicated commission has been established within the Department for Consumer Protection,” the ministry said in its official statement.
Despite the concerns raised publicly, MINTI confirmed that no formal complaints have been submitted so far by consumers regarding alleged miscalculations of electricity meters.
However, starting April 1, 2026, the commission will begin field inspections, offering verification services for any consumer who files a complaint. This proactive approach is expected to strengthen public trust and address any potential irregularities in energy billing.
The ministry also indicated that guidance has been provided to help consumers understand how to independently check their electricity meters within residential buildings.
The initiative reflects broader efforts by Kosovo’s institutions to improve accountability and service delivery in the energy sector, particularly at a time of heightened public sensitivity over utility costs.
