The Government of Kosovo has decided to impose additional sanctions against Russia. These measures were introduced through an amendment to the government decision of June 13, 2024, regarding the “implementation of international sanctions by the Republic of Kosovo in accordance with its international obligations towards individuals and entities linked to or responsible for actions that undermine and threaten the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine.”
Kosovo’s Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, stated that this decision is being taken in line with the implementing decisions of the European Union Council. Meanwhile, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Liza Gashi, explained that these measures are intended to strengthen existing sanctions.
According to Gashi, these measures avoid expanding the list of individuals and entities linked to Russian organizations involved in military and destabilizing activities. Furthermore, she said that these new measures also impose additional restrictions, such as the prohibition of exports of advanced technology and goods that impact Russia’s industrial and military capacities.
“We have also imposed sanctions on the liquefied natural gas sector, with measures against 50 ships used by Russia,” she added.
On December 13, 2024, the Government of Kosovo had previously imposed sanctions on Russia and Belarus in relation to the invasion of Ukraine, as well as on Iran due to its missile program. The government had approved the EU and U.S. sanction packages 12 and 13 against Russia and Belarus during a meeting. The EU adopted Package 12 of sanctions against Russia on December 18, 2023, while Package 13 was approved on February 23, 2024.
