The rapid spread of seasonal influenza and the sharp rise in suspected cases have pushed Kosovo past the epidemic threshold, the National Institute of Public Health of Kosovo (IKSHPK) announced on Thursday, reports RFE.
Epidemic Threshold Surpassed
The epidemic threshold, a parameter used to evaluate the risk of disease spread and implement control measures, is set at 5,000 or more cases in Kosovo. Between January 6 and 12, the country recorded 7,826 suspected cases of flu-like illnesses.
Additionally, the Infectious Diseases Clinic reported one death—a 79-year-old patient.
“Each season, Kosovo’s health institutions record flu-related deaths, primarily among individuals aged 65 and older or those with chronic conditions, mirroring trends seen in European countries,” IKSHPK stated.
Global Flu Impact
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), seasonal flu affects around 1 billion people annually, with 3 to 5 million severe cases and 290,000 to 650,000 deaths globally each year.
Understanding Seasonal Flu
Seasonal flu is an acute infectious disease that can cause serious complications, particularly in children, the elderly, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
Common symptoms include:
- Sudden fever
- Dry cough
- Headache
- Muscle and joint pain
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
While most people recover without complications, those with severe symptoms or underlying conditions are advised to seek medical assistance.
Prevention Measures
Vaccination remains the most effective way to prevent seasonal flu. With immunity from the vaccine diminishing over time, annual vaccination is recommended.
The Ministry of Health has secured 85,000 vaccine doses for the season, available at local family health centers in all municipalities. IKSHPK continues to urge citizens to get vaccinated.
