The government of Kosovo has approved in principle an initiative to establish a framework agreement for defense cooperation between Kosovo and the United States.

Acting Prime Minister, Albin Kurti, stated that this agreement aims to advance mutual cooperation in defense, focusing on defense planning, strategic stability, and the enhancement of military strategic capabilities.

“In today’s meeting, we discussed 23 proposed decisions. Among them, the most significant was the initiative for the framework agreement on defense cooperation between our country and the U.S. In this agreement, we are committed to advancing mutual cooperation, focusing on defense planning, strategic stability, and the development of military strategic capacities,” Kurti said.

The agreement will be represented by the Ministry of Defense of Kosovo and the U.S. Department of Defense.

“The Ministry of Defense, based on strategic objectives and planning for cooperation with allied states, and in coordination with the U.S., has initiated the establishment of this framework agreement. With this agreement, Kosovo and the U.S. are committed to advancing defense cooperation, including defense planning, strategic stability, and the enhancement of military strategic capacities,” Kurti explained.

Meanwhile, Minister of Defense, Ejup Maqedonci, emphasized that the aim of the agreement is to advance cooperation in this field, aligning with Kosovo’s broader goals of Euro-Atlantic integration.

“In full coordination with the U.S., we have initiated the framework agreement for defense cooperation. The purpose of this agreement is for both parties to engage in advancing cooperation in the defense sector,” Maqedonci stated.

He also noted that such a step in cooperation is being undertaken in line with Kosovo’s wider Euro-Atlantic integration goals, security threats, and increased interoperability, all while relying on the strong existing partnership in defense and security.

Kurti announced that Maqedonci would speak further about the initiative in a press conference following the government meeting.
