Avdullah Hoti, a deputy from the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), has urged political parties to convene as soon as possible and agree on a date for new elections. Hoti emphasized that this is an obligation given the political crisis engulfing Kosovo, where the leading party has repeatedly failed to form a parliamentary majority.
Hoti highlighted that the LDK, in the absence of a parliamentary majority and clearly stating its intention to remain in opposition due to election results, had proposed a comprehensive transitional government with a limited mandate and timeframe. However, Hoti noted that this proposal required consensus from all political forces, a consensus which he believes clearly does not exist.
“Consequently, it is the obligation of political forces to sit down as soon as possible and agree on a new election date. The country cannot be left without institutions. If political forces cannot agree to form a parliamentary majority, then the sovereign (the people) must speak again,” Hoti stated.
He further elaborated on the current political landscape, stressing that while the leading party from the elections has the right to propose a candidate for Assembly Speaker and form a government, new institutions cannot be established without securing a parliamentary majority. He described this as an elementary rule of Kosovo’s constitutional system.
After 27 failed attempts to elect the Assembly Speaker, Hoti asserted it is clear that the leading party has failed to form a parliamentary majority. He urged them to accept this reality and seek consultations with other parties on constitutional modalities to resolve the political crisis.
