Kosovo Imposes Sanctions on Three States, Government Announces Good News for Diaspora

In today’s meeting, the Government of Kosovo approved sanction packages against Russia, Belarus, and Iran.

The government cabinet approved the proposal to implement the EU Council decisions on imposing restrictive measures against the Islamic Republic of Iran, a proposal to amend Government Decision No. 01/64 dated February 25, 2022, to implement the EU Council and US decisions on imposing sanctions against the Russian Federation and Belarus in relation to the situation in Ukraine, and the proposal to implement EU Council decisions on imposing restrictive measures concerning serious human rights violations and abuses in the Russian Federation.

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Liza Gashi, elaborated on these measures, stating that one of the sanctions against the Russian Federation is related to the killing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny.

“In continuation of supporting the opposition to Russian aggression against Ukraine and in line with the EU and US sanctions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora proposes for review and approval the decisions to implement the 12th and 13th packages of EU sanctions against the Russian Federation for violating and threatening the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence of Ukraine, and other sanctions for serious human rights violations and abuses related to the killing of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. Also, the package of sanctions against Iran, specifically against individuals and entities involved in nuclear missile activities and those providing support to the Iranian government,” said Gashi.

Kosovo has been part of the Western states that have sanctioned Russia for the war in Ukraine since it began in 2022.
